Bristol Bay Census Region
population: 1,159

The Bristol Bay Borough in Southwestern Alaska was incorporated as the state's first borough in 1962. With only 505 square miles, it is geographically the smallest census area in the state.

The economy is highly seasonal and based almost entirely upon harvesting and processing the wild sockeye salmon runs of Bristol Bay. The borough contains three commercial fishing communities. Naknek is the largest of these, the seat of the Bristol Bay Borough, and its administrative center. King Salmon, the second largest community, is the region's transportation hub. Millions of pounds of salmon are trucked from Naknek to King Salmon each summer, where jets transport the fish to foreign and domestic markets. South Naknek is a more traditional community, and is not linked by road to the other two.

In recent years low salmon prices and smaller harvests have severely impacted the area's economy. As a result of this downturn, many fishermen have dropped out of the fishery. In 2002, only 1,183 drift net fishermen operated their vessels, well down from the more than 1,800 that usually participated throughout the 1990s. Bristol Bay drift net permits that sold for an average of $248,802 in 1989 had fallen to the $20,000 range by 2002. Because the borough's revenues largely depend upon the fish taxes generated by local processors, the decline of the fisheries has led to adverse budgetary consequences for local government.
