Dillingham Census Region
population: 4,930
The Dillingham Census Area in Southwestern Alaska consists of 11 small communities scattered along the northeast edge of Bristol Bay.
The economic base is highly seasonal and mainly based on the harvest and processing of Bristol Bay sockeye salmon. There are three onshore processing facilities, and numerous floating facilities east of Dillingham in Nushagak Bay, and several more floating processors that operate near Togiak.
The City of Dillingham is the economic, transportation, governmental, and public service center for western Bristol Bay. Commercial fishing, fish processing, cold storage, and support of the fishing industry are the mainstays of the city's economy. Most families in outlying communities depend heavily on subsistence foods.
In recent years low salmon prices and smaller harvests have severely impacted the area's economy. As a result of this downturn, many fishermen have dropped out of the fishery. In 2002, only 1,183 drift net fishermen operated their vessels, well down from the more than 1,800 that usually participated throughout the 1990s. Bristol Bay drift net permits that sold for an average of $248,802 in 1989 had fallen to the $20,000 range by 2002. Because the borough's revenues largely depend upon the fish taxes generated by local processors, the decline of the fisheries has led to adverse budgetary consequences for local government.
