Wade Hampton Census Region
population: 7,294
The Wade Hampton Census Area in Southwestern Alaska covers 17,124 square miles, an area more than twice the size of Massachusetts. The 7,028 residents, (92.5% Alaska Native), are scattered among 16 small communities. Lacking a hub city, the area relies upon neighboring Bethel as a supply center.
The economies of these mostly Yupik villages are essentially subsistence based. Sources of income include commercial fishing, fish processing, fire fighting, fur trapping, and the manufacture of arts and crafts. The provision of supplies and services is also a large component of the cash economy.
Opportunities for year round employment are primarily in the areas of federal, state and local government, public education, and village organizations. Private sector wage employment accounts for only 30% of the region's jobs. High unemployment rates and low earnings characterize the area, with 26.2% of the population falling below the federal poverty level in 1999.
Commercial fishing has traditionally been the mainstay of the area's economy. The harvest of Yukon salmon has suffered in recent years due to low prices and extremely poor returns. Since 1992, communities in western Alaska have formed CDQ groups which own exclusive harvest shares in the lucrative Bering Sea fisheries. Earnings from these ventures have been invested in job training and placement programs, which may point to higher employment levels in the future.
